Wow, what a range. Truly operatic. I don't know much about her, so I did a Google search and found this "official" fansite dedicated to the Peruvian diva:http://www.yma-sumac.com/It has good information for Yma Sumac newbies, like me.According to the website's "News" page http://www.yma-sumac.com/news.htmSeptember 13 is the singer's birthday. She will be 86 years old. She apparently is sick and would appreciate letters from well-wishers (no requests for autographs, please). Cards can be sent to:Yma Sumac4013 W. Paramount have never released Secret of the Incas on DVD, so we'll have to put up with watching the movie in low quality here until they do.Yma Sumac is 86 years old in 4 days time (13th Sep)... at least that's what the Inca Princess says.
Ah, what a story, a blend of truth and fiction: Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo and her transformation into the Inca princess Yma Sumac, eventually extricating herself from husband Moises Vivanco's hold on her career to become a diva in her own right. What is truth about her is the power of her captivating voice and the fact she played some of the world's most distinguished halls. Of course, as Stuart correctly points out the clips are from Secret of the Incas, a 1950s Hollywood movie about ... secret of the Incas, in which Yma guest stars. The homage the Peruvian government and Peruvians in general paid her on her trip after various decades to Peru was very moving. I didn't know her birthday was coming up, but I did know she has been in delicate health. Thanks for the comments. Saludos!
